"Safe Travels" Stamp

WTTC Safe Travels

The World Travel and Tourism Council has awarded destination Tobago with the official "Safe Travels" stamp after the development of a Tourism Industry Health and Safety Manual for Post Covid-19 by the Tobago Tourism Agency Limited.

The "Safe Travels" stamp is the world’s first ever global safety and hygiene stamp for travel and Tourism, designed specifically to address COVID-19 and similar outbreaks, awarded only to destinations with health protocols in sync with those of the WTTC.

As local brand ambassadors of the “Safe Travels” stamp, the Tobago Tourism Agency Limited encourages local industry stakeholders to implement the protocols outlined in the Manual that have been vetted and endorsed by the WTTC. Once local industry stakeholders are willing to follow through and adopt the practices outlined in the document, they too can be awarded use of the "Safe Travels" stamp to use for their own businesses.

Tourism Industry Health & Safety Manual for Post Covid-19

The impact of Covid-19 has no doubt affected the sustainability of the tourism sector globally. As destinations seek to recover from this effect, a renewed focus on health, safety and sanitation would be key to slowing the spread of the virus as well as instill confidence in the travel and tourism industry.

In this regard, the Tobago Tourism Agency Limited has developed a working document with practices and suggestions on moving the hospitality and tourism industry forward post Covid-19. Some of these sources of data include:

  • Centre for Disease Control (CDC)
  • Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA)
  • World Travel and Tourism Council – WTTC Safe Travel Protocols
  • World Health Organisation
  • United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO)
  • Peer-reviewed Journals
  • Primary data sources such as consultations with stakeholders in Tobago representing the various subsectors of the industry.

This manual synthesises from the aforementioned sources and produces a holistic document which aims at serving as a guide to the Tobago tourism businesses and operators. It provides them with the most adequate measures that they can implement to reinforce destination safety and underline the trust of tourists, workers and residents.

IMPORTANT:  Please note that while the "Tourism Industry Health and Safety Manual for Post Covid-19" takes into account current guidelines from health authorities, including the Ministry of Health Trinidad and Tobago and reputable international bodies, it is a living document subject to change as new information becomes available about COVID-19.

I believe that the world has changed fundamentally, and as much as we all want it to go back to the way it was, there are now new standards that businesses will be judged by.

The Safe Travels initiative is a great stepping off point in embracing this new standard. It will assist businesses in providing a framework to stay competitive and show our customers that we are focused on their safety. [TTAL's health and safety manual] offers great guidelines for businesses to improve their health and safety standards.

As a responsible stakeholder, I view this initiative as mandatory not only for the safety of Tobago’s visitors but, also for the safety of our staff and family. It will certainly assist us in our continued efforts not only to promote our services individually, but also collectively as a destination.

Having the approved Safe Travels Stamp endorsed by WHO and WTTC certainly sends a strong signal to the world that destination Tobago has demonstrated that level of responsibility that is required to regain the trust and confidence from our visitors.

This initiative is extremely important and relevant to our industry in the COVID-19 era of our lives. In an ever-changing space, we need brand recognition that guests and staff can refer to and find a level of comfort and confidence in order to visit, stay, fly, dine and lounge.

We will be using the stamp on our online media platforms, sales and promotional material, and as part of our training - anything that helps to spread the word of the initiative and what we are doing to have a safe place for guests and staff alike.
